Star Wars fans, like us, wanted to juggle light sabers this morning with the announcement of the early opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The news had me excited. But browsing through the media gallery now has me ecstatic, but also torn. Do we make plans now or wait until Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is also open?

Black Spire Outpost is the name of the village inside of the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. As the largest settlement on the planet Batuu, Black Spire Outpost is an infamous stop for traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space.
Living Your Own Star Wars Adventures
From the get go Disney has been billing this as “living your own Star Wars adventure.” This really had me wondering what that would really look like. Would it be similar to the Star Wars virtual reality experience like The VOID offers, or something different? I’m not saying there won’t be virtual reality components to the new Star Wars rides. But I now think it means something very different.
What we know is that visitors can use the Play Disney Parks mobile app to join the resistance, pledge loyalty to the First Order or aid a smuggler. This immersion in making choices about your experience is what Disney says will distinguish these parks from any other themed land in history.

Guests can also use the app to partake in missions, translate a galactic language or discover what is hidden in crates throughout the land.
Guests will also be able to construct their own astromech droids at the Droid Depot. They can craft their very own customized lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop.

Experiencing the Tastes and Smells of Galaxy’s Edge
Ever wondered what Blue Milk tastes like? Galaxy’s Edge guests will have the chance to find out. From exotic beverages at Olga’s Cantina and uniquely flavored popped grains from Kat Saka’s Kettle to barbecued Ronto’s Warps from Ronto Roasters and Blue and Green Milk from the Milk Stand the foods will surely immerse you in this world.

Galaxy’s Edge Two New Attractions
It is important to note that this early opening of Galaxy’s Edge will only include one of the two new rides. This may create a dilemma. Do you go at opening, and then again when Rise of the Resistance opens? Or, do you wait for it all to be available?
We haven’t booked anything yet, but here’s my take. The Disney Parks are HUGE. We were at Walt Disney World in Orlando for four days in June and barely scratched the surface. I think you plan on going twice. Likely you would need that time to actually experience everything.
And, don’t forget about the new luxury Star Wars themed hotel in the works at Walt Disney World. No date has been announced for this yet. But it will surely make our family travel bucket list.
But here are the dates. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run will open at Disneyland May 31, 2019 and at Walt Disney World August 29, 2019. There is no date yet for the opening of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, other than it will be later this year.

At Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run visitors take the controls of the Falcon in one of three unique and critical roles as the ship hurtles through space. At Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance visitors participate in a fight against the First Order, including a faceoff with Kylo Ren.
Important to Note: At Disneyland a reservations system will be put in place for access to Galaxy’s Edge. Information on this system will be forthcoming on the Disney Blog.
