Granby Lake in Grand County, Colorado

Lake Granby is the third largest lake in Colorado. The lake is home to several fish, including sockeye salmon and various trout species, making it the perfect spot for fishing enthusiasts. It’s a fun spot to visit with the family for a day out on the water. You can go swimming, fishing, or sunbathing while in the area.

There are many beautiful lakes in Colorado. But, with three lakes right next to one another this is one of our favorites. On the way to Grand Lake, first you pass Granby Lake and then Shadow Lake to finally arrive at Grand Lake and the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Lake Granby is located about a ten minute drive from the town of Granby, Colorado. This is a beautiful area, and home to one of our favorite mountain playgrounds, Snow Mountain Ranch.

What Is There to Do at Granby Lake?

Granby Lake is a popular tourist attraction. People come from different parts of Colorado and other areas across the country to experience this lake firsthand. Because it’s such a large body of water, there are plenty of things for people of all ages to do.

Go for a Swim

If you’re looking for a way to cool down on a hot day, a trip to Granby Lake is in order. It’s a great spot to visit when you’d like to go for a swim. Not only can you swim in the water, but you can also stand around and get your feet wet or participate in different water-related activities to keep yourself entertained.

Enjoy a Day of Fishing

Whether you’re standing by the lake or hanging out on a boat, you can go fishing in an attempt to see what you can catch. You never know what you might find! Because the lake is home to plenty of fish, you might just get an excellent catch with your fishing rod.

What to Expect When You’re Visiting Lake Granby

You should know a few important things before you visit Lake Granby. The water is cold! Don’t be surprised by the significantly low temperature of the water because it’s perfectly normal. You’ll get used to it in no time, especially if the sun is shining bright and it feels hot and humid outside.

If you’re going to spend time at the campgrounds near the lake, pack accordingly. It’s often exceptionally cold by the water at night, so it’s a good idea to have a hooded sweatshirt, comfortable sweatpants, and insulated blankets that will keep you warm. You’ll have a few options when selecting the campground that you’d like to stay at during your visit to Lake Granby.

Some of the campgrounds are pet-friendly. You can bring your four-legged friends with you to spend time by the lake. If your pets enjoy the water, you can let them hang out in the lake with you!

Don’t forget that this is a famous lake. You can expect to see a lot of other people there during your visit. Both tourists and residents enjoy spending time by Lake Granby because of its natural beauty, fun, and excitement. While it does get crowded, you’ll still have plenty of space for socializing with loved ones and hanging out in the water without feeling claustrophobic.

If you’re spending time at Lake Granby, you won’t be too far from the Arapaho National Forest. This forest is a spot worth visiting for an unforgettable experience out in the wilderness. It’s a well-maintained area with dozens of trails available for the public to use. 

Arapaho National Forest is also a fantastic place to visit during any season, even in the winter. You can spend a day visiting the forest, enjoying the fresh air, and taking photos of all the plants and species you’ll see while you’re there.
