Winter Family Fun: Make Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows

Mystery Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows

Here is one recipe with a secret ingredient to spice things up. This one may be best for the adults or foodie kids, but even younger kids will enjoy guessing the mystery flavor.

Mystery Hot Cocoa Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of cocoa
  • 2 cups of powdered sugar
  • 2-1/2 cups of powdered milk
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of cornstarch
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper. Yes, that’s right cayenne pepper.
  • Lots of marshmallows.

Mystery Hot Cocoa Directions:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together until everything is evenly mixed.
  2. Fill your cup or mug halfway up with the mixture and add hot water.
  3. Stir it up and you will have a great hot cocoa that adds a little zip.

Old Fashioned Cocoa with Marshmallows

Old Fashioned Cocoa Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 4 cups of milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla
  • Lots of mini marshmallows

Old Fashioned Cocoa Directions:

  1. Mix the cocoa and the sugar together in a bowl.
  2. Heat the milk in a saucepan until scalding.
  3. Take about a third of the milk and mix it in with the cocoa mixture.
  4. Return the cocoa mixture to the milk in the saucepan.
  5. Stir until it is completely blended and add the vanilla.
  6. Add marshmallows and enjoy.

Brown Sugar Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows

Here is a simple hot cocoa recipe that makes use of brown sugar instead of granulated white sugar.

Brown Sugar Hot Chocolate Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of hot milk
  • 3 ounces of unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/3 cup of water
  • 3/4 cup of brown sugar1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • Lots of marshmallows

Brown Sugar Hot Chocolate Directions:

  1. Melt the chocolate and the water in a double boiler.
  2. Mix in the milk, sugar, and salt.
  3. Mix it all together and pour into four cups.

3 Ingredient Hot Chocolate

I don’t always have specialty baking items in the kitchen. Unless my daughter has been baking we’ll be lacking powdered sugar and other ingredients for hot cocoa. But the three things we typically have are milk, chocolate chips and marshmallows. Throw the first two in a pit, simmer and voila: top with marshmallows and serve.

  • Milk
  • Chocolate chips (or chop up a chocolate bar)
  • Lots of mini marshmallows

  1. Combine milk and chocolate chips in a pan on the stove
  2. Simmer and stir for 5-10 minutes until chocolate is melted
  3. Serve with marshmallows

To Go Hot Cocoa

This is a simple one that you can make in advance and use whenever you have a craving for hot cocoa. Pack it in baggies and take on your winter adventures. All you’ll have to find is hot water to mix with it to enjoy while out in nature.

To Go Hot Cocoa Ingredients:

  • 5 cups of dry powdered milk
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 cup of cocoa
  • Lots of mini marshmallows

To Go Hot Cocoa Directions:

1. Mix all of the ingredients together and put in air tight containers.
2. When you want one serving of cocoa simply mix 5 tablespoons of the mixture with 3/4 cup of water.
